Are India and Pakistan at risk of a serious earthquake?
Social media and WhatsApp groups in Pakistan have been rife with rumors that a significant earthquake is imminently expected to strike the South Asian region, which includes Pakistan, India, and other nations.
The rumours gained traction after the Solar System Geometry Survey (SSGEOS) organization's Twitter account predicted seismic activity in some regions of South Asia based on lunar activity, planet locations and geometry, and other celestial objects. "Potential for great seismic activity in or near the purple band 1-6 days. That is a projection. Other areas are not left out.
The "prediction" was followed by a tweet from the same account that included a video of Dutch "seismologist" Frank Hoogerbeets indicating "possible" seismic activity hotspots including Pakistan, Afghanistan, and India.
But are these forecasts accurate? Will there be an earthquake in the upcoming days in Pakistan and India?
The short answers to these two questions are: No, and we don't know, according to science.
It is not possible to anticipate earthquakes, according to contemporary scientists who have harshly criticised Hoogberts and groups like the SSGEOS for their poor and unscientific methodology.
"A serious earthquake has never been foretold by the USGS or any other scientist. We are unsure about the method and do not anticipate learning it any time soon "As stated on its website by the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
Only "within a limited number of years" are scientists from the USGS able to predict the likelihood of a big earthquake occurring in a given location.
According to Caltech, a famous centre for science and engineering, "it is currently impossible to forecast exactly when and where an earthquake will occur, as well as how large it will be."
